Adriano: Barca’s most prolific wing back ever

barcelona wing back adriano

Adriano Correia came to the ranks of Barca quietly and without fuss but he is already one of the most valuable additions as of late. The signing of Adriano was the first of the ‘Sandro Rosell era’ and was the most secretive of all. When the agreement with Sevilla was reached and finally announced, Adriano’s name had not even appeared in the press, but the Brazilian is making a historic start to this season and nothing seems to be in his way.
With five goals in 11 matches in the league, only the insatiable Lionel Messi (25) is ahead of him in the ranking of the Barca goal scorers.

Equal on goals with Cesc Fabregas and David Villa, Adriano, who also scored against Alavés in La Copa del Rey, has emerged as the undisputed player in his position in the first team for coach Tito Vilanova. What is also new for the club is the fact that never before has there been a Barca winger who has scored so many goals.

Only Dani Alves, finished the 2008-09 season with five goals in 34 games. Adriano has the same amount of goals but an amazing 23 games fewer than Alves.

His goal against Atletico Madrid on Sunday was crucial to Barca and poured hot coals on the effect of Falcao’s goal which left Barca trailing by a goal to nil. His curling beauty of a left footed shot that found the top corner of Courtois’ net was just like the one that stunned Diego Alves when the Catalan side beat Valencia by a goal to nil.

His work of art on Sunday against Atletico brought out the best in Barca when the team was in need against a very good “colchonero” side. Adriano took on both Filipe Luis and Arda Turan and made them pay a high price.
Adriano’s goal brought the The Nou Camp to their knees, chanting his name. This was something very few could have imagined when the club invested just 9.5 million euros in 2010 for his signature.

A fully deserved extension of his contract (expires in 2014) should be on the cards soon as the player has shown to Tito and the Barca board the full extent of his versatility. Such is the confidence that Vilanova has shown in Adriano, that he made him to play in the midfield for the first time in his career against Real Madrid, passing the test with flying colours.

Although his role should be as a substitute for Jordi Alba on the left, Adriano has blossomed into a first team starter on the right. Alves has been pushed out of the first team and Montoya has been out of the running for two full games. To date there is no debate as Adriano wins hands down!
