FIFA refuses to acknowledge Messi’s record

FIFA is refusing to recognise the goal scoring record that Barca star Leo Messi beat last week against Betis. The Argentine, who has beaten “Der Bomber” Gerd Muller’s record tally of 85 goals in one calendar year, will not have the record approved by FIFA according to a spokesperson of the governing body. FIFA have not only refused to approve Messi’s record but also that of Zambian striker Godfrey Chitalu.

The Zambian goal-scoring controversy arose after claims by the Federation of Zambia, who defends the 107 goals from Chitalu. It appears that the governing body of world football will not resolve these claims.

“We don’t have a database which details every football game played in every country from around the world since day one of their formation,” said FIFA spokesman Alex Stone speaking to the BBC.

He said that the Organisation did not recognise Messi – or anybody else for that matter – as holding the record.

“It’s a record where someone in the media obviously collected statistics from somewhere and noticed Messi was about to pass that record.”

Recognised by the The Guinness Book of Records

Messi, with his brace of goals at Betis last weekend, matched the 85 goals from Gerd Muller thus equaling the German’s 40 year record, and beating it against Córdoba with another 2 goal strike. The Zambian Federation however, has also claimed the record of 107 goals scored by Kabwe Warriors striker Godfrey Chitalu.

The Guinness Book of Records said on Thursday that it did recognise Messi’s goal tally. With the 87 goals scored including the brace he got at Córdoba, he has already surpassed the record of 85 goals scored by Gerd Müller.

To add more excitement to the mix Brazilian club Flamengo has stated that Messi is still one goal shy of the record set by Brazilian star Zico, who the club say scored 89 goals in 1979.
