French footballer and Barca star Eric Abidal spoke out today and said that if he can continue playing football he will, but if it’s not possible, he’ll carry on forward with the support of his family.
Abidal, who underwent a liver transplant last April, received the distinguished XIII Prix Pyrenees last night, which is granted by the French Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona to individuals, companies, or associations that have been outstanding in their outreach between France and Spain.
Even more so, Eric Abidal has been rewarded for being a role model for everyone from the world of sport to the members of society for his efforts and perseverance in the fight against cancer.
“The doctors say that it is not normal what I’ve gone through. I will struggle to try and play again. If I can, I can, and if not, then I will continue on with the support of my family,” said Abidal when asked if he would be seen on the pitch again.
“I want to thank everyone for this award. Last year was a very difficult year for me, I fought hard,” said Abidal, who stressed the role of his wife and family in his recovery process.
The French defender pointed out that he feels good and that he trains a little by little each day although he admitted that it “had been a tough year”.
Looking ahead, the Frenchman said that when hangs up his boots he would like to work with children to help them reach the pinacle in the world of football.
Eric Abidal has stated that he expects the 2012 Ballon d’Or to stay at the Nou Camp, but didn’t say whether he preferred Leo Messi or Andres Iniesta, two of the three candidates for the FIFA award.
Whatever the great Eric Abidal decides, it will surely be for his best and his family’s interests. If he does make it back onto the pitch, we will welcome him with open arms for sure.
