Adriano wants to help Messi beat Muller’s record

messi can beat muller's record tonight

Barca defender Adriano wants Argentine team mate Leo Messi to smash the German Bomber Gerd Müller’s record when they play Lisbon outfit Benfica tonight in the Champions League.

Argentine maestro Lionel Messi is just one goal away from equalling Gerd Muller’s record of 85 goals for club and country in a calendar year. The Bayern Munich legend has held the record for an amazing 40 years and Messi could shatter it tonight against Benfica and write himself into the history books once again. If he fails tonight, the 25 year old star will have another chance when Barca play away against Real Betis on Sunday in the league.

Barca defender Adriano had this to say about Messi:

“First we want Leo to beat Muller’s record, then we want to help him add even more goals.
“He is a phenomenon — each season Leo wants to increase his goals total to show just what a unique player he is.
“We are all waiting for this moment in history when he beats the record. We all know it will happen. He is the best player in world football.
“I am so happy to be playing play next to him.”

To put it all into perspective, this is how Leo Messi has achieved his awesome tally of 84 goals so far this year: For Barcelona 72, for Argentina 12, In La Liga 54, the Champions League 13, the Copa Del Rey 3, the Spanish Super Cup 2, In international friendly games 7 and in World Cup qualifiers 5.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who has suffered at the hands of the Argentine in the past, only has praise for him:

He has won absolutely everything he can at club level, and beaten all the numbers. Could he be the same player somewhere else?

“I believe that Barca suits him well, they have lots of possession, so they can keep the ball while he finds a good position to be a threat.

“But, I reverse it, would Barca be the same without Messi? Certainly not, they quickly would become much more normal.”

Tito Vilanova had this to say about his star player:

“Messi deserves to beat Muller’s record. And it would be sensational to do it against Benfica in the Champions League.
“But it’s not an obsession with us. We shall play our normal way.”

If Leo Messi manages a brace against Benfica at the Nou Camp tonight, he will beat Gerd Muller’s remarkable record of 85 goals in a calendar year, with nearly a full month to spare.
