Messi receives his second Golden Boot

messi shows off his golden boot 2012 award

Leo Messi proudly picked up his second Golden Boot award on Monday for scoring an impressive tally of 50 goals in one season in domestic and European football. Real Madrid frontman Cristiano Ronaldo came second with just four goals shy of Messi’s record haul.

The 25 year Barca frontman then dedicated the award to his fellow team mates with the likes of Xavi and Puyol present at the ceremony held in Barcelona.

The Argentine had a few words to say after collecting his second Golden Boot award:

“It is a prize for scoring goals, but without my teammates I couldn’t have scored them. I share this award with them as I always do”.

“I don’t fight for individual awards, I fight for titles. My goals are reclaiming the league crown, winning the Copa del Rey and the winning the Champions League again. Those are my goals, team goals.”

Messi’s first Golden Boot came in 2010 when he helped Barca to the league title with a tally of 34 goals and is highly tipped to take his fourth Ballon D’Or trophy for the worlds best player. Of course, he is up against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and even Iker Casillas as well as team mates Xavi and Iniesta for the coveted trophy but Messi looks highly likely to take home the prize once again.

Barca coach Tito Vilanova had this to say about his star player:

“We won’t see another player like him, and if we do, it won’t be for a very long time. “It’s not just for the goals he scores, but for how he sees and understands the game, that is what makes him so great. On Saturday, he ran 50 metres to defend a corner in the 89th minute with a 5-0 lead. Not many players would have done that.”

Messi has scored 17 goals in all competitions to start this season, and has his sights set on yet another milestone he is sure to reach very soon. He is just two goals away from equaling Brazil great Pele’s feat of 75 goals for club and country in one calendar year, set in 1958.
