Morale boosting win at Seville

seville-vs-barcelona-2012

It was a morale boosting win at Seville last night for Barcelona FC that ended with the Catalans scoring two goals past Palop.

It has been an emotional week for Barca with the passing away of Basora and the news that Eric Abidal needs a new kidney. With this win that leaves the Catalans just seven points from Madrid, it came at just the right moment and was a real morale booster for the team.

From the start, Barcelona showed why they are still current league holders and put in some impressive work especially from Xavi and Cesc.Barca completely dominated the midfield and literally bossed Seville around. Seville wanted to play attacking football but found themselves pinned back in their own half by a superior Barca side.

It was Xavi who found the net first for the Catalans, too. A perfectly placed free kick which flew over a hapless Palop’s head and into the top right hand corner was just sublime! After Xavi’s goal Barcelona continued to create more chances with an Andrés Iniesta effort just going shy of the post. Then came messi’s party piece of the season: The little Argentine played a quick one-two with Iniesta on the edge of the penalty box, nutmegged Spahic and brilliantly chipped Palop who was rushing out to meet him. This goal must surely be a candidate for goal of the season, the guy is pure magic!

After Messi’s brilliant goal the game opened up a bit and there were chances at both ends of the field. A bit of a faux pas from both Piqué and keeper Valdés nearly opened the door for Del Moral to score but it wasn’t to be.

The second half proved better for Michel’s team and Seville upped their game and nearly produced goals from a couple of nice crosses from the right. There was also a penalty appeal from Reyes that could have turned the game around, too. Del Moral for Seville came very close to scoring on 65 minutes from a Jesús Navas cross.

A few changes from Pep in the second half soon brought Seville back under the cosh again and it was Barca who nearly scored when messi and Iniesta combined perfectly only for Don Andrés’ shot to go wide. This now makes it seven straight wins for Barca and leaves them trailing seven point behind leaders Real Madrid who take on Málaga CF tonight at 21:30 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
