Barcelona Lose out to Real Madrid

After a terrific match and some excellent control by Barcelona it was real Madrid that lifted the Copa del Rey last night in Mestalla. It went to extra time as the pair were in a headlock and it was a first half of extra time strike by Cristiano Ronaldo that did the damage.

As Sandro Rosell, the Barcelona president, said after the game “Barcelona doesn’t come away empty handed”. Barcelona played some exquisite football but it wasn’t enough to beat a Real Madrid team who have been waiting years for this moment to come.

One of the highlights of the game was Mourinho’s use of defender Pepe as a marksman. It turned the game around for the whites and Pepe even hit the post as Pinto was nowhere near getting a hand on it. Messi showed his usual flashes of brillance but could not find a way through Real’s defence.

Towards the end of the game there were visible signs of weariness from both sides and once Cristiano Ronaldo put the ball past Pinto it was a matter of just holding on.After the game the players went to La Cibeles in the centre of Madrid to celebrate with their fans.

Saturday is the next game. What will happen there?
